When we got the base unit and tried it out, people on the other end of the line commented that they could not hear people 5 feet away from the base unit. Hence, we went ahead and bought the extensions to put at the ends of the table. No more comments.
Recommendation is to use the guidelines but order it if after you determine you need it through actual use.
